Prompt #283: Memory Lane

The moment I started reading the blog of Cousin Pons, I was hooked. He has a wonderful writing style and I always look forward to reading more of him. Of course I was interested to see what posts he chooses as his top 3. If you want to follow him, you can find him on his blog or on Twitter.

Top 3 by Cousin Pons

Choosing three pieces from the twenty one entries this week has been one of the hardest things I’ve done in a long time. I have read each work at least twice in an effort to help me come to a decision. The quality of the writing has been excellent. Reading these highly enjoyable works I have been introduced to ideas, concepts and thoughts which have entertained and enlightened me. In many instances the writers have bared their souls on areas which are raw with emotion. There has also been plenty of love, sex and downright wickedness reflected here. The three I have chosen are:

Cold Water by Midnight at the Oasis
The opening paragraph describing the peaceful scene in and around the stream is masterful. I was hooked and immediately drawn into the story which was a joy to read from the beginning to the scary ending. There was so much pleasure to be had reading this including the sex which was as hot as the Australian outback

Harm Reduction Look into the Mirror David by Michael Samadhi
This is a subject I knew little about but I was totally engrossed and moved by it. As the final line says ‘If a man is measured by the difference he makes in other’s lives, David was a true giant.’ The scene with the mirrors was truly memorable. Having had a young cousin die from drugs I found this story particularly poignant.

The Girl in the Mirror by Pixie Heart Blog
The writer opens her heart to us as she sits in a coffee shop. Her memories of her miserable early years pour out in a brutally honest fashion. Hope of a better life comes with the arrival of her ‘darling Maîtriser’. The final scene where she stands in front of the mirror listing ten things she likes about herself is heart-achingly moving and brilliant.
